Event: USS Midway Tour

If you have not been to the USS Midway I highly recommend it. The history of the ship is incredible, as well as the view of the Bay and North Island Naval Base. It is quite amazing when you think of something so massive being able to float. It’s a small city, being able to house about 5000 sailors.

Some of us met up off Convoy to drive together and some others met us at our lunch spot. In attendance were the Terrey and Laura Leyland, Ed and Sandy Mathieus, Ed and Alexandra McWilliams, Don Benke, Lex Dunn, Tom and Kathy Luckie, and Robert and Kathleen Reid. We had a very nice lunch at Fish Market Grill, which is right next to the USS Midway. After lunch we toured the ship.

We started at the top on the flight deck where we got to see our very own member, Dave Grundies, plane. Now we know where the “Warbux” moniker comes from. That was listed as his call sign on the side of the plane. It is an honor to have him and others who have served in the club, unfortunately he was not able to participate as he was helping out some Marines in Okinawa.

We got to see where the sailors slept, cooked, did laundry, and especially cool was the engineering rooms. They were doing a special exhibit called “Top Secret, Carrier Intelligence Center”. This was about the role this ship played in Desert Storm. The exhibit was interactive and they had video playing as well.

What a great way to spend the day in San Diego.

Event: San Dieguito Park Picnic
Where: San Dieguito Park

We had a beautiful drive through Del Dios Highway and Rancho Santa Fe to get to San Dieguito Park. A couple of members met us there as it was closer to their residence.

I personally have never been to this park and I have lived here for 30 years. It is beautiful. So many trees so we weren’t hurting for shad at all. In fact we moved into the sun for a little bit just to get some warmth. It was a nice day but a bit breezy but the sky was blue and cloudless.

Since it was potluck style we had some great dishes. Kathy Luckie made pimento cheese sandwiches, another first for me and it was deli-cious. Ed Matheus made his famous Hawaiian shrimp pasta salad. Having lived in Hawaii before this is a favorite. Nothing like plate lunch as they call it over there. Gisela made a wonderful dip to eat with tortilla chips. John brought fried chicken, and who doesn’t like that? Lex brought a nice bottle wine to share along with some snacks. I cheated as I didn’t have time to prepare anything, so it was a #13 Jersey Mike sandwich to share, but those are delicious.

We had a great time just hanging out and it is always nice to chat about what everyone is up to. Other people who were at the park stopped to admire the cars as always. I think we should do this event again next year.
